A Detox alternative for React Native end-to-end testing
mini vs Detox.
Detox runs the gray-box tests your team writes. mini writes and runs its own.
| Capability | Detox | mini |
|---|---|---|
| Writes the tests itself | A scenario and its acceptance criteria | |
| Keeps them current as the app changes | Automatic with GitHub; via your coding agent otherwise | |
| Flags issues no test asked about | UI/UX suggestions, never blocking | |
| iOS, Android and web | iOS and Android, React Native only | No desktop Safari or Edge |
| Physical phones | Android phones; iOS on simulators | iPhones (TestFlight) and Android phones, on request |
| Hundreds of device models | Android only, via a device cloud | Few models: simulators, emulators, some phones |
| Video, repro steps and fix prompt by default | Artifacts you configure | Plus steps to reproduce |
| Same path on every run | Gray-box sync with the app | Path varies; criteria stay fixed |
| Open source, free to self-host | A hosted service |
Same release. Different hands.
One pull request renames Pay, with a new test ID. Your team edits the Detox test; mini edits its own.
Pick the one that fits.
Checked against Detox’s public docs on 5 October 2026.
Pick Detox if…
- You want gray-box sync with your app’s JavaScript and animations.
- You want tests versioned next to the code they test.
- Your app is React Native only, and will stay that way.
Pick mini if…
- Your team would rather not write end-to-end code.
- You ship native or web apps beside the React Native one.
- Your flows leave the app: email codes, Google sign-in, a second phone.
Move over by journey.
Run both
Keep Detox in CI while mini writes its own suite.
Bring your Detox tests
mini reads them, with your repository, to learn what you cover.
Retire by upkeep
Retire the Detox tests you edit most. Keep the gray-box ones.
Questions.
Can mini run alongside Detox?
Yes. mini doesn’t touch your Detox setup. Run both on the same builds, and retire a Detox test only once mini covers it.
Is mini more reliable than gray-box testing?
We don’t claim that. Detox syncs with your app’s internals, so its runs repeat exactly. mini needs no testIDs, and its criteria stay fixed.
Does mini handle React Native animations?
Yes. When mini builds your Expo or React Native app, looping animations are frozen by default; you can switch that off in the app’s settings.
Is mini as fast as Detox?
No. Detox replays what you wrote; mini reads each screen first, so tests take longer. Keep Detox where per-commit speed matters most.
What build does mini need?
mini builds the commit or takes an upload from the CLI. Emulators need x86_64; iOS needs a Simulator build, or TestFlight on physical iPhones (on request).
How does mini fit into our CI?
On GitHub, mini posts a check and a pull-request comment; the check is informational until you choose to block merges. Any other CI uses the minitest CLI.
Keep Detox where it’s exact. Hand mini the rest.
Bring a React Native build and the tests you edit most. We’ll run mini beside them.
