An Appium alternative without selectors to maintain

mini vs Appium.

Appium runs the WebDriver scripts your team writes. mini writes its own tests.

Same release. Different hands.

One pull request renames Pay, with a new test ID. Your team edits the Appium test; mini edits its own.

Pick the one that fits.

Checked against Appium’s public docs on 5 October 2026.

Pick Appium if…

  • You want full control, in a language your team already writes.
  • You automate desktop or other platforms through Appium drivers.
  • You run your own device lab and want to keep it.

Pick mini if…

  • Maintaining selectors and page objects is your biggest testing cost.
  • You’d rather not run servers, drivers or a device grid.
  • Your flows need several phones in one test, without scripting each step.

Move over by risk.

  1. Run both

Keep Appium in CI while mini writes its own suite.

  2. Start with the brittle ones

Hand mini the flows whose selectors break most.

  3. Keep what must be exact

Leave Appium the checks that must be scripted to the letter.

Questions.

Can mini run alongside Appium?

Yes. mini doesn’t touch your Appium setup. Run both on the same builds, and retire a Appium test only once mini covers it.

Is an agent less predictable than a script?

Yes, the path can vary: mini picks each action from the screen. The acceptance criteria stay fixed; an ungradable run is marked Unprocessable, never guessed.

What build does mini need?

mini builds the commit or takes an upload from the CLI. Emulators need x86_64; iOS needs a Simulator build, or TestFlight on physical iPhones (on request).

How does mini fit into our CI?

On GitHub, mini posts a check and a pull-request comment; the check is informational until you choose to block merges. Any other CI uses the minitest CLI.

Do I need accessibility IDs for mini?

No. mini reads the screen as a user does: no selectors to keep in sync. Keep your labels anyway; screen-reader users need them.

Can mini run on our own device lab?

No. mini runs on its own devices: physical iPhones and Android phones on request, plus simulators, emulators and browsers.

Keep Appium where it’s exact. Hand mini the brittle flows.

Bring a build and the Appium tests that break most. We’ll run mini beside them.
